Authorities say it will take time to decide whether to seek death penalty in Bikini Murder

GREENVILLE, S. C. (Crime Library) — Now that they have him, prosecutors are in no hurry to decide whether Jerry Buck Inman, the 35-year-old convicted sex offender charged with strangling Clemson University co-ed Tiffany Souers late last month, will face life in prison or the death penalty when he is tried for her murder.

"The next step for us is to determine whether this is a death penalty case," a spokeswoman for 13th Circuit Solicitor Bob Ariail told Crime Library this morning. "There is no urgency; the man is in jail and he's never going anywhere so the urgency is off."
The 35-year-old ex-con, who also is a suspect in two sexual assaults in neighboring states, including his home state of Tennessee, has reportedly confessed to strangling Souers with her own bikini top in her apartment not far from the university where she was set to begin summer classes. Though authorities in South Carolina declined Thursday to discuss the details of his confession, The Associated Press reported that Inman, who had a history of sex offenses against women and is listed on both the Florida and North Carolina state sex offenders' registries, had a habit of driving around looking for potential victims. Authorities have said that Inman hadn't even realized that he had crossed into South Carolina — where he was not on any sex offender's registry — where Souers was slain.
