MEMPHIS, Tenn.  (Crime Library) — A career broadcaster who once subbed for host Dick Clark on American Bandstand has been indicted by prosecutors in Maryland, charged with child rape. Memphis Fox affiliate WHBQ personality Ron Meroney, age 69, was arrested by agents from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) on Wednesday, May 3, 2006, and charged with statutory rape of a child under 14 in Wicomico County, Maryland (MD).

On December 19, 2005, a letter was sent from Meroney's accuser in Maryland to Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen. Memphis NBC affiliate WMC obtained that letter on May 10, 2006, and quoted the following portion:

"Please do what you can to expedite his extradition and to protect the children of Memphis... this man has many victims, including my five brothers and sisters."

The alleged incidents occurred between June and October of 1974, while Meroney was visiting family in Salisbury, MD.

Following Meroney's arrest on May 3rd, Memphis media quickly discovered via public records that similar charges had been filed against the newsman while Meroney was living and working in Maryland over 20 years ago.
