Daniel DiPiero isn't the first American to end up missing from a cruise ship in recent years. One of the most high-profile instances was the disappearance of honeymooner George Allen Smith IV, a young man from Greenwich, Connecticut (CT), who vanished from the Royal Caribbean Brilliance of the Seas on July 5, 2005. Smith disappeared in the early morning hours after a night of drinking and gambling as the ship was en route to Turkey.

The Mariner of the Seas is also owned by Royal Caribbean, Ltd, based in Miami, Fl.

Smith's disappearance is still a mystery, and a website set up by George Allen Smith IV's wife, Jennifer Hagel-Smith, gives some of the reasons why:

"The cruise line reported that George's disappearance was an accident, and it insinuated to the public that it was his fault. We subsequently learned that there is substantial evidence of foul play, including blood in and outside of our cabin and other significant forensic evidence, much of which was quickly destroyed or altered by the cruise line. There is also evidence that other passengers and cruise line employees arrived at and/or entered our cabin around the time of George's death."

Dan DiPiero was missing at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 15th, according to those traveling with him. He had not slept in the cabin they shared that night.
