SANTA ANA, Calif. (Crime Library) A 29-year-old man pleaded guilty Friday to having sex with an underage girl who later committed suicide when he broke up with her.

Kiley Ryan Bowers of Dallas, Texas, met the 15-year-old Orange County girl over the internet and the pair began a torrid online sexual relationship that ended a year later with the girl's death and a six-count federal indictment of statutory rape and child pornography.

Faced with the possibility of a 180-year prison term, Bowers pleaded guilty to interstate travel for the purpose of illicit sex and transporting child pornography. Four other counts were dropped and he will receive nine years in prison when sentenced on June 18.

"Parents need to realize that having a teen-ager on a computer unsupervised is like opening the front door of their house to a stranger, it's just as dangerous," said the prosecutor, Assistant United States Attorney Kenneth Julian. "This was a very good girl who was doing well in school and did not have any type of criminal record."

Bowers met the girl, identified as KDH, over the internet in mid 2005. They communicated through emails, instant messages and internet video. At one point, Bowers helped KDH create a My Space profile for herself where he would post messages. The girl's parents found out about the profile and deleted it, forbidding her to have any contact with Bowers because of his age, according to court documents.

KDH's parents took her computer away for a few months, so the girl resorted to using a school computer and the telephone to stay in contact with Bowers.
