Yet Shaffer had also lost his mother to cancer, a disease that sometimes delivers a double blow to the sufferer and family by taking a terrible toll on them for months or years before the patient succumbs. Brian Shaffer was drinking on April 1st, and in an article posted on the web by Columbus's NBC 4 on April 5th, a friend of Shaffer's named Meredith Reed described Shaffer's leaving that night, "Clint and Brian were talking about something, and Brian mentioned he was going to go up, like toward the stage area," she said.

Shaffer was not seen again, yet the quote from Meredith Reed could suggest he wasn't even intending to leave the establishment when he left the table. The exuberant message Brian left on his girlfriend's profile on the 31st of March could be read as either misdirection, if he was intending to vanish in some manner, or further indication that whatever happened after Shaffer left 1546 N. High St. on April 1st was anything but expected.
