Mitochondrial DNA from animals has been admitted as evidence in U.S. courtrooms since 2002, when prosecutors in California linked the body of a murdered seven-year-old girl to her killer by matching mitochondrial dog hairs found on her body to her killer's pet.

While the tests Williams' lawyers are having conducted may not result in his immediate release, they are certainly of significant interest to the citizens of Atlanta. If the hairs prove to be inconsistent with the dog Williams had in 1982, it will cast further doubt on the prosecution's case, and in the end, they might prove that the Georgia courts have kept an innocent man incarcerated for over two decades.
