"As far as I knew there was nothing wrong with our relationship," Fields says. "There was never the discussion of divorce between me and her—never."
Maureen's father disagrees. He told Crime Library that his daughter wanted a divorce. "The marriage was going badly. She was terribly afraid of her husband."
Fitzgerald said Maureen told family and friends that if anything ever happened to her, they needed to look no further than her husband to find the person responsible.
Fields, who two years ago lost a lung to cancer, says he would not have been physically capable of killing his wife and disposing of her body.

"I get out of breath just walking to my car," he says. "I don't know what they think I could've done. My wife was a very strong woman."
Fields joked that because of his physical limitations it would have taken him a week to dig a hole big enough to bury his wife's body.
