WAYNE, Pa. (Crime Library) — Ellen Robb's face was unrecognizable when police found her lying on her kitchen floor in a pool of blood three days before Christmas. She'd been beaten so severely that veteran homicide detectives thought she'd been blasted in the face with a shotgun.
Her husband, University of Pennsylvania economics professor Rafael Robb, said he found his wife dead when he came home from work just before 2:00 that afternoon.

Robb told detectives that after he discovered his wife's body lying on the floor in the kitchen, he went upstairs to put his briefcase and laptop computer away. Then he went to check on the family dog, which was locked inside the bedroom of the couple's 12-year-old daughter. On the way, he walked past at least two telephones. He then came back downstairs and went outside and called the police from his cell phone.
Instead of calling 911, Robb dialed the 10-digit main telephone number for the local police department.
Robb told detectives that he thought a burglar had broken into his home and murdered his wife. A pane of glass in the back door had been knocked out. Detectives found broken glass on the floor, but it did not appear to have been stepped on.
