In May of 2011, 14-year-old Jamey Rodemeyer of Buffalo, N.Y., posted a video to his Youtube account, proclaiming, "It gets better!" and encouraging other gay and bisexual teens to hold their heads up and seek the support of others. Then, on Sunday, September 18, Jamey took his own life. In one of the last entries on his Tumblr blog, Jamey wrote that he wanted to see his recently deceased great-grandmother, and thanked Lady Gaga, whom he greatly admired. His last tweet was to her: "@ladygaga bye mother monster, thank you for all you have done, paws up forever."

Just over a week earlier, on Sept. 8, Jamey wrote: "No one in my school cares about preventing suicide, while you're the ones calling me [gay slur] and tearing me down." Jamey endured torment both at school and on his Formspring accout, a website where users can anonymously leave questions and messages for each other. One particularly hurtful post read, "I wouldn't care if you died. No one would. So just do it :) It would make everyone WAY more happier!" After Jamey's suicide, users on the Tumblr community, where Jamey felt accepted, showed an immense outpouring of sympathy and support.
