After over two years on the run, a television psychic was arrested in Spain on May 7, 2010, as part of Operation Captura, a Crimestoppers campaign to catch British criminals hiding in Spain. Martin Anthony Smith, who had appeared as a psychic on the British cable television program Most Haunted in 2007, was wanted in connection with a rape of a child under 16, gross indecency with a girl under the age of 16, indecent assault of a girl under 16, and attempted rape of a girl under 16. The alleged events took place between 1995 and 2005. Failing to answer bail, Smith is believed to have fled Britain in December 2007, along with his wife Lianne and their daughter Rebecca. While on the run, Lianne had another child, Daniel. When Smith was extradited back to Britain in December 2010 to face the charges against him, Lianne, who stood by her husband, allegedly suffocated both children with a plastic bag in a hotel room near Barcelona. Lianne reportedly confessed to the killings, citing fears that her children would be taken away.
