OFFICER'S PRIVILEGE: THE COL. GEORGE MARECEK STORY

A Comrade Confides

Though Preston didn't really understand it at the time, he got a glimpse of the side of Marecek that Viparet apparently feared when he reported to the colonel that he had failed to get the letters and of the warning Marecek's neighbor had given him.

Marecek, according to court papers, replied, "I'll take care of it... F...ing bitch, I'm getting tired of her crap."

A few days later, ostensibly to celebrate their ninth wedding anniversary, George and Viparet Marecek loaded up the car and headed off to Cape Fear for a small vacation.

The way Marecek has always described it, the trip was a welcome respite, a chance for his wife and him to reconnect with each other, a time set aside for lolling on the beach and perhaps get in some fishing on the Cape Fear River.

He consistently maintained that Viparet had been looking forward to the trip.

Others, however, have suggested that in her private moments, she had serious misgivings. In fact, prosecutors allege, the day before they were to leave, Viparet confided to a friend - the same woman who had warned Preston to be careful - that "she was afraid she might not return," according to court papers.
