NOTORIOUS MURDERS > DEATH IN THE FAMILY

Two in a Million

Big Mouth

There is, perhaps, one type of murderer that attorneys and judges and juries rarely—if ever—see in a court of law facing charges: the professional hitman. The Mafioso's pivot man. Like Christopher and Paulie Walnuts on the Sopranos. The one who cleans up messes. The one who knows how to kill without drawing attention to himself.

How?

The hitman, for one, does not tell anyone who and/or when he is going to kill, nor does he brag about his crimes or even talk about them.

It is all business. Killing. For money. For honor. For blood.

The other reason is, the professional hitman never, under any circumstances, takes along an accomplice, unless the co-conspirator is part of "the club."

The Ewells were not in any way involved in organized crime. This was clear from the earliest moments of the investigation. Still, investigators were stumped. They had theories, but very little evidence to support any of them. In fact, at the crime scene, it was the lack of forensic evidence that was the cause for concern. As staged as the scene had looked, the killer had done a solid job of wearing gloves and picking up all of the trace evidence.

As an investigator, when you have no clear-cut physical evidence to sift through and study, you have to look toward motive and begin to investigate from that perspective. The two most popular motives for murder are money and love. That said, investigators were left with beginning the process of tracking down those who might have had a reason to kill the Ewells. Both (money and love) drive people to commit murder, even people who would not be otherwise inclined to consider themselves murderers. Money and love have both contributed to murder since the beginning of time. And both, whether it was clear in the Ewell case from the onset, fit into the way in which the Ewells were assassinated.
