Dale Ewell was born and raised in Oxford, Ohio. He relocated to Long Beach, California, in the late 1950s to work for Douglas Aircraft before settling in Fresno. President of Western Sales Inc., in Fresno, a moderately large company that bought and sold general aviation aircraft, Dale was known to be a tough businessman, but also someone who loved Westerns and cowboys and anything manly, who brought that masculine energy into his work.
Glee Ewell was a bit more complicated.
A well-educated woman, Glee held a bachelor's degree in international management from the University of Arizona. She had been a teacher and assistant director of the Fresno Regional Foundation, a rather unique community-based support group. According to its Website, the FRF, established in 1966 as a nonprofit community foundation, "provides unique opportunities for individual donors, families, businesses, and other foundations to invest in programs that address a wide spectrum of economic, social, educational, cultural and environmental needs. With more than 125 donor advised funds, as well as field of interest funds, designated funds, scholarship and unrestricted funds, Fresno Regional Foundation is the trusted steward of charitable giving in the region."
Lots of people knew Glee. Lots of people loved Glee. Lots of people respected Glee.
According to those who knew her, Glee was the type of person who always gave of herself, someone who was more than willing to go beyond a handshake and neighborly smile and open her heart.
That's why it was a surprise to everyone when it was learned that Glee—such a gentle woman, seemingly innocent and June Cleaverlike—had also been in the C.I.A.
