MARIETTA, GA (Crime Library) — And so this is Christmas, and what has John Hayes done? He's taken the reindeers and rearranged them for fun. Dasher and Dancer used to hold their heads high, but when John boy was finished, they both wanted to cry. He'd taken their innocence and thrown it away, leaving them behind in a sexually explicit display.

I'm no poet or songwriter and I admit I might have been influenced a tad by John Lennon's Christmas song, which just so happened to come over the radio as I penned that opening, but then again Lennon was not familiar with 46-year-old John Scott Hayes. For you see, what you just read contains more fact than fiction.

Apparently, last week John thought it would be fun to load some local teens into the back of his Ford Super Duty pickup truck for a night of merry little pranks. John and his horde of bandits invaded a quiet Cooks Valley subdivision in search of Christmas decorations residents had proudly displayed on their front lawns. While many of us may find ourselves doing the same thing this holiday season, these midnight travelers weren't there to take in the sights or sing holiday carols. No, they had far more sinister things on their to-do lists.

According to police, John and his band of adolescent elves spent the night destroying several residents' Christmas displays and even took the time to place some of the homeowners' reindeer lawn ornaments in sexually explicit positions. Unfortunately for John, the pranks did not go unnoticed and one unhappy homeowner confronted him about his Grinchly deeds.

"I said 'Are you crazy?' and he said, 'It's just a bit of fun,'" the unidentified man said in an interview with CBS46.com.

The following morning residents of east Cobb were dismayed when they discovered John's tomfoolery. Some were also angered when they learned an adult was the mastermind behind the incidents.

"We try as hard as we can to keep our kids on the straight and narrow, and then to find out it was a parent actually doing this, it makes you wonder," Jennifer Schuchmann said in an interview with the same Web site.
