In the more-than three weeks since the slayings —perhaps the most dramatic and disturbing in the area in recent memory — authorities have kept a tight lid on information.  State police and local authorities have released few details, and have declined to discuss the case with reporters. Though authorities have said they have received a number of tips in the weeks since the slayings, they have not shared them with the public, nor have they given any indication they are any closer to solving the mystery of who killed David and Carol Keeffe. "It's still very much an open case," said one law enforcement official who spoke to Crime Library.

The crime

The slayings first came to light on Nov. 19 when police were summoned to the mountaintop compound shared by the Keeffes and two other families. Investigators have declined to say who or what brought them to the estate. Once there, they found the couple dead inside the garage of their home. An autopsy later revealed that the couple had died probably two days earlier, and that both had been shot repeatedly with a shotgun.

If authorities recovered the murder weapon, they are keeping that detail to themselves.

There was, according to some familiar with the probe, no evidence of a burglary or robbery, nor was it particularly likely given the remote location of the couple's home that they were killed by someone who had accidentally stumbled on them.
