"I went to Adam and said, 'What is going on and who are the Hawkses and he said, 'You don't want to mess with these people,''" Harris testified. She added that she was contacted again and asked to notarize a bill of sale that didn't contain signatures and she complied out of fear.

Newport Beach police detectives tracked down Harris and she confessed to what she had done. She admitted destroying her notary seal and log book that the Hawkses should have signed during a normal notarization.

Under cross examination, Harris was shown a police report in which she told a detective that Adam said not to mess with "this guy" rather than "these people." The defense is trying to show that Jennifer did not participate in the killings or the planning of them and complied with many of her husband's schemes because she feared for her life.

Jennifer sat at the counsel table, still and silent. Throughout most of the proceedings she stared straight ahead or at the table, never glancing at the jury. Her long brown hair was pulled back from her face and she wore a brown suit. Just 20 feet away sat a dozen members of the Hawks clan who have religiously attended every court appearance as the prosecutor unveiled grisly details of their deaths and the plot surrounding it.
