Richmond, VA (Crime Library) — The Mathews County grand jury was originally scheduled to hear the Taylor Behl case on Nov. 21.  But now, authorities say the case will probably not come before that grand jury until January, 2006.

George O. Peterson, family lawyer to Janet Pelasara, Taylor Behl's mother, told Court TV's Crime Library that there is "no one reason for the delay. It's (Mathews County prosecutor's office) a one-man shop. They want to have all the forensics ready, re-interview all witnesses and be prepared from A to Z."

Virginia's "speedy trial act" requires that a defendant's trial must begin no longer than 152 days from the defendant's indictment. Peterson said that the speedy trial act may not apply in this particular case, but prosecutors want to be completely prepared for any eventuality.

Taylor Behl was a 17-year-old freshman at Virginia Commonwealth University, an urban campus in Richmond, VA. She was last seen on Labor Day, Sept. 5. Her remains were found in rural Mathews County and identified Oct. 6. Mathews County is 70 miles from Richmond on the Chesapeake Bay.
