Kara Beth Borden and David Ludwig: What Really Happened?

By Steve Huff

LANCASTER, Pa. (Crime Library) — As of November 15, 2005, Kara Beth Borden, or someone with access to her username and password, had removed most of her online presence — a profile at myspace.com and Kara's two blogs at Xanga.com.

However, the entirety of one blog was not yet deleted, and in that weblog, created using a variation on Kara Beth's "KareBear" screen name, she had pasted, on October 17, 2005, at 2:20 p.m., an instant message transcript of a chat she had with a friend. Using yet a third variation on her "KareBear" nick, Kara Beth seemed to show a different side to her personality. Kara Beth's screen name and that of her friend have been removed and punctuation added, but the misspellings and abbreviations are reproduced as found in the transcript.

Kara Beth Borden's friend was concerned,"Kara - this is my place. cuz no one else knows and things are getting out of hand..."

Kara Beth responded; "why what do you know? ...or what have your heard? or saw.... or what? if it doesnt have anything to do with you, then i dont want to know... what you have to say. no offence. if it has to do with david and me, we are taking care of it — we know what we are going to do. so you are just gonna go tell everyone?"

Kara's friend reassured her, "no i'm not. i will NEVER do that..."

Kara Beth Borden's response seemed filled with a kind of resignation; "whatever it is, just leave it alone. david and i have enough to deal with, trust me. so just let it go......i hve to talk to david anyway bout something..."

But her friend was angry — "trust you? umm no cuz you're both lying to me..."

Kara cautioned, "i dont want you to get involved in it. you have no place."

Her friend seemed to admonish Kara Beth Borden, then; "well then you two should have thought about that before you let this go any farther then liking each other.."

It was then that Kara seemed to grow angry, "why are you even my friend....see i have to act..."

The chat between the two friends did not seem to end well. Kara Beth Borden wrote later in all capital letters, the internet equivalent of shouting; "YOU DONT UNDERSTAND WE TOOK THAT RISK THE FIRST NIGHT HE CAME OVER... we said

you couldnt understand why we took the risk... but why we liked eachother

but (...) you have no idea

Kara's friend said, abbreviating the word "whatever" as w/e, "I can understand someone liking someone, but w/e Kara..."

Kara Beth Borden seemed adamant. "you dont know how we feel about each other and how much we want to be with each other..."

What became clear upon reading the chat Kara transcribed into her second Xanga on the 17th of October — also referenced in this November 15, 2005 article in the Lancaster (PA) New Era by Janet Kelley and Cindy Stauffer, "Clues to killings?" — was that the relationship between Kara Beth Borden and David Ludwig was intense, most likely sexual in nature, and a burden on at least one of Kara's friendships. Accompanying Kara Beth's second Xanga site was a profile photo that showed a decidedly different face as well — gone in this photo was the blonde haired and winsome teen with braces, replaced by a seemingly sullen girl with a ballcap and sunglasses, throwing some kind of sign, possibly just a peace sign, at the camera.

Study of the sites Kara later removed as well as David Ludwig's myspace.com and Xanga pages showed little evidence of this intensity. There was a fairly innocuous comment made in early October of 2005 by Kara on David's myspace — http://www.myspace.com/haydren — but no outward sign that the couple had anything more than a friendly acquaintance.
