After the separation, Maria was excited about some new career prospects and relationships. After seeing a flyer for an acting job, she went to Hollywood for a casting call. She met someone in her apartment complex who worked in the fashion industry. She began to date a restaurant manager from Pasadena. But then, she also became a target for a stalker who likely was her killer.

Irving wasn't aware at the time that someone had been following her because she never talked about it. In fact, the night before the couple had gone out to dinner, and Maria was planning a menu for Christmas dinner. Irving also asked her if she thought there was a chance they could get back together. "She said, 'Let's give it some time,'" he recalled.

The next morning, Dec. 1, 2005, Irving arrived at Maria's home to give her a ride to work because she had left her car at his house the night before. He was greeted by a scene so gruesome that he has trouble talking about it now, two years later. "Never in my life have I seen a dead body, and to see her, it was overwhelming," Irving said. "I was gagging. It was really bad. There was blood everywhere."
