NASHVILLE, Tenn.— In July, authorities arrested Bruce Mendenhall, 56, and charged him with the murder of 25-year-old Sara Nicole Hulbert. Within a week, police in Birmingham, Ala., also filed murder charges against Mendenhall in the death of 44-year-old Lucille Carter. In August, Mendenhall was charged in a third case, the first-degree murder and abuse of a corpse in the death of Symantha Winters, 48, of Nashville. Metro police now believe Mendenhall could be responsible for "several" unsolved murders dating back to the 1980s. "[Metro Nashville police] have several. More than two or three," Metro Police Detective Sgt. Pat Postiglione said at a recent press conference. "We have unsolved cases that somehow fit the criteria... The circumstances, although not exact, are all similar in nature and geographically they're all over the country." Since Mendenhall's arrest, nearly 100 police agencies across the United States have inquired about him. The investigation continues.

SOWETAN, South Africa — Last week, police arrested two more suspects in the murder of eight women whose remains were found in sugarcane plantations on the KwaZulu—Natal South Coast. According to police Superintendent Zandra Hechter, workers who were burning controlled fires in the sugarcane fields have found the skeletal remains of a ninth victim. Hechter said police are also trying to determine whether a link exists between these murders and the murders of two other women whose bodies were found at the Majola Tea Plantation in April. Three suspects have been arrested in connection with the murders. Their identities have yet to be released; however, Hechter has described them as two men and a woman. All three suspects appeared in court last week on charges of abduction and murder. Postmortem exams suggest the first five victims were strangled and possibly raped. To date, only one of the victims has been positively identified.

ENGLAND— For the first time in more than 30 years, Carl Sutcliffe, 42, the younger brother of convicted serial killer Peter Sutcliffe, 61, has gone public about his brother and the turmoil his crimes have caused him. During an interview with Thesun.co.uk, Carl said he was stunned when his brother was arrested for the Yorkshire Ripper murders. "I was just shocked. Numb, really... I couldn't believe it was the same Peter I knew. For him to turn out to be this mass murderer, the Ripper, is just beyond any comprehension. It's as if he was Jekyll and Hyde." According to Carl, he has been forced to bear part of the burden of his brother's crimes. He said he cannot go out in public without hearing people whisper, "Oh, there goes the Yorkshire Ripper's brother." Despite the problems his brother's crimes have caused him, Carl still visits Peter at the Henley Ward of Broadmoor Hospital. Nonetheless, Carl said he does not believe Peter should ever be released. "I'm his brother but I don't think it would be very fair for the victims' families for him to come out after doing all those horrible things."
