WHEELING, W.Va. (Crime Library) — One year ago today, 24-year-old Kristen Anderson vanished from an apartment complex where she had been staying with a friend. Kristen's family immediately suspected Kristen's estranged husband, 27-year-old James Anderson. Anderson allegedly bragged to a friend about killing his wife, boasting that her body would never be found. Not long thereafter, Anderson took his secrets, including the location of Kristen's body, to the grave.

According to Kristen's brother, Ed Edwards, Anderson and his sister married in 2000. From the beginning, his family disapproved of the relationship. James was controlling and manipulative, and not long into the relationship, he allegedly became violent.

"None of the family liked him at all," Ed said in a telephone interview with Crime Library yesterday. "When he beat her up a couple of years ago, she took the kids and went to live with my mom. The police showed up at my mom's and told her if she didn't get back home with him, they were going to take the kids from her for abandonment or kidnapping or something ridiculous, so she had to go back home. From then on, she had to pay rent even though she lived with him as his wife. She wasn't even allowed to use the computer; it was password protected. He was very controlling."

By September 2006, Kristen had reached her limit with Anderson. She took the kids and left their Wheeling home to live with a friend at JayCee Manor Apartments in Martins Ferry, Ohio. The town is just across the state line, barely four miles from the Wheeling city limits.

Kristen was anxious to start a new life for herself and her two small children. Anderson, on the other hand, wanted his wife back and would show up at the apartment every other day, begging her to return home. Kristen was unmoved by his emotional pleas. Her mind was made up, and she refused to concede. She was done with the abuse, done with the lies and done with Anderson.
