Just last month in England, where the rave scene was born 20 years ago, 11 officers were injured breaking up two separate parties.

Hundreds of angry rave enthusiasts rioted in France for hours when their party was banned.

And outside Salt Lake City, it was the police who injured partygoers while breaking up an event with about 1,000 people, according to an online diary written by one reveler.

The internet is filled with web sites where rave enthusiasts lament the public's perception that their culture is dangerous.

"Rave's are usually LEGAL, with permits being had by the promoters, and i'm sorry, but if i was promoting a LEGAL party, the last thing i would want is for something bad to happen at it. Security is hired, people are searched, drugs and alcohol are kept out as best as possible. The rave scene is no more dangerous then a concert, infact thats exactly what it is," wrote one partygoer.

Rave promoter Christian Lestat Bussiere said partygoers just want to be left alone.

"Yes you can find drugs at big city raves with 30,000, but you can also find drugs any where else too. Raves was not big then until the news starting talking about it."

At least in Los Angeles, the violence at underground parties often starts with some sort of love triangle, Detective Sage said.

"You mix alchohol, drugs and kids and you are going to get violence," he said. "All it takes is someone's boyfriend or girlfriend to be interested in someone else and violence breaks out."

And Emmery's death could been caused by a similar circumstance, police speculate.

"This type of scene led to her demise," Preciado said.
