Emmery Munoz Had Become Engulfed in Dangerous Lifestyle

Emmery spent weekends attending "flyer parties," an offshoot of the rave scene because news of the events is often distributed via flyer at school, said LAPD narcotics Detective Eric Sage.

"The girls dress to impress and it's very sexually oriented," Sage said. "There's a lot of nudity and sexual content to the flyer scene."

This subculture is indicative of the heavily Hispanic East Los Angeles area where gangs often rule and venues are not rented out like many traditional rave parties, Sage said.

Instead, partygoers often break into abandoned warehouses dotting the landscape. One such party was held in a grimy East Los Angeles area where those unlucky enough to be living or working must look out of windows covered by metal security bars because murders, carjackings and gang shootings are commonplace.

Down a trash strewn side street are a dozen industrial warehouses that are deserted at night. The last one on the right was where Emmery was discovered. It had been the scene of a prior party that one of her friends declined to attend.

"I prefer to go to house parties and not factory parties because I always thought bums lived in factories," the friend said. "I don't want to go and have bums beat us up. We passed by that factory and I saw it and thought, 'Ooh...I don't want to go to a party in there. It looks all nasty and dirty and I don't want to get sick."

The friend ended up going somewhere else and Emmery went inside.

That was long before Emmery was killed. Police believe the culprit attended a party there because the location would normally be too remote for anyone else to select as a place to dispose of a body.

Once inside, revelers can usually find methamphetamine, cocaine and marijuana, Sage said. Makeshift stands are set up to sell alcohol and laughing gas inside a balloon. Emmery's friend said she wasn't a drug user other than occasionally using laughing gas.
