NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (Crime Library) — Jon Jarvi was always looking for the big score, a way to make a quick buck.

It landed him in jail on federal counterfeiting charges, where he had the unfortunate luck to run into fellow inmate Skylar Deleon, a one-time child actor who was serving time for burglary. Deleon, 27, was good at concocting scams, officials say, so it was only a matter of time before their stars aligned.

That day came on Dec. 27, 2003 as the men left the jail on their regular work furlough programs. But instead of going to a job site, Deleon — who once acted in the "Power Rangers" television series — had convinced Jarvi to take a quick jaunt to Mexico on a get rich quick scheme, according to the Orange County District Attorney's Office.

The day before, Jarvi, 45, had refinanced his condominium and cashed two $25,000 checks.

Deleon arrived back at his cell a few hours late; Jarvi was found by the side of a road halfway between Tijuana and Ensenada, his throat slit. Ironically, Deleon might have gotten away with it if police hadn't been investigating him a year later in connection with the murders of Thomas and Jackie Hawks, according to the district attorney.
