NEOSHO, Mo. (Crime Library) — A gunman opened fire in the sanctuary of the First Congregational Church of Neosho on Sunday afternoon, killing three people and wounding several others.

The gunman, who was carrying two small-caliber handguns and one 9 mm semiautomatic pistol, began his bloody rampage shortly after 1 p.m. today, during a service held by a Micronesian congregation — a group of worshippers from the Pacific islands. Approximately 50 worshippers, both adults and children, were in the sanctuary when the gunman began shooting. Several people cried out as the hail of bullets cut them down. When the gun smoke cleared, three people were dead and nearly half a dozen others lay injured.

According to a spokesperson for the Neosho Police Department, they received a call at 1:54 p.m., reporting a shooter at the church, which is located at 115 N. Wood St. The caller told them at least one person was injured.

Shortly after the call was received, officers from the Neosho Police Department surrounded the church and secured the scene. A negotiator spoke with the gunman for approximately 10 minutes before police entered the building and apprehended the suspect.
