LANCASTER COUNTY, PA. (Crime Library)   — For the past month, residents of Manheim Township have been living in fear of a faceless killer who purposely snuffed out the lives of Thomas Alan Haines, 50, his wife Lisa Ann, 47, and their son, Kevin, 16.  In an unexpected turn of events, police now say Kevin's former friend and classmate, Alec Kreider, 16, has confessed to committing the murders.

At about 2:20 a.m. on May 12, Margaret "Maggie" Haines, 20, was awakened by a commotion coming from her brother's bedroom.  When she went to investigate, she heard her mother call to her from her parents' bedroom.  When she stepped inside, Maggie found her mother, Lisa Ann, sitting on the edge of the bed bleeding profusely from a wound to her stomach.  Barely conscious, Lisa told her daughter to "go get help."  Maggie quickly ran next door to a neighbor's house and called 911.

When investigators arrived on the scene, they discovered that Lisa had succumbed to her injuries.  Her husband, Thomas Alan, was lying on the bed behind her.  He was also dead.  In a nearby hallway, authorities discovered Maggie's 16-year-old brother Kevin. He had also been stabbed to death like his parents.

According to the police criminal complaint, Kreider confessed to his father early last week.  Two days later, his father notified authorities of his son's admission.  The affidavit of probable cause reads in part:

"Approximately 7:00 p.m., Thursday, June 14, 2007, Timothy Scott Kreider (dob: 9/29/67) reported to Det. Allen Leed of the Manheim Township Police Department and Cpl. Pat Quigley of the Pennsylvania State Police that his son, Alec Devon Kreider, age 16, (dob: 2/4/91) admitted to him on Tuesday, June 12, 2007, that he (Alec) intentionally entered the home of Kevin Haines with the intent to smother Kevin Haines.  Mr. Kreider said that Alec then told him that instead of smothering Kevin, Alec intentionally used a knife to kill Kevin Haines and Kevin's parents."
