RENO, Nev. (Crime Library) — After 10 days on the lam, Darren Mack, the millionaire pawnbroker and swinger accused of murdering his estranged wife and the attempted assassination of the judge who oversaw their contentious divorce, has been apprehended in Mexico, authorities said.
In a brief statement released this morning, the Reno Police Department, which has been spearheaded what had become an international manhunt, announced that Mack had been arrested. Earlier, the US Embassy in Mexico City, confirmed that Mack had been arrested late Thursday in Puerto Vallarta, one of several beach resorts in western Mexico where the globetrotting accused killer had been spotted in recent days.

"The arrest of accused killer Darren Roy Mack proves that criminals cannot find a safe haven on either side of the border," Ambassador Tony Garza said.
In a statement released this afternoon, Reno authorities said that Mack surrendered to U.S. and Mexican officials in Puerto Vallarta at about 10:30 p.m. Pacific Time Thursday. The surrender came hours after he had failed to follow through on a pledge he had made to Washoe County District Attorney, a long time acquaintance of his, to surrender earlier in the day.
Mack was scheduled to be flown from Puerto Vallarta to Dallas, Texas, where Reno police would be waiting to shuttle him back to Reno where he faces murder charges in the death of his 39-year-old wife Charla. Mack is also expected to be charged with attempted murder for the attack on Family Court Judge Chuck Weller.
Mack's return to the United States eliminates one key concern for authorities who had fretted that that Mack might have taken advantage of Mexico's reluctance to return prisoners to the United States if they might face the death penalty. But authorities have also noted that Mexican and U.S. officials have been working closely on several cases in recent months, and that so far this year 54 people, including Mack have been returned to the United States from Mexico to face criminal charges. Just this week, U.S. Embassy officials trumpeted the extradition of two suspects who had appeared on America's "Ten Most Wanted Lists."
