WISCONSIN RAPIDS, Wis. (Crime Library) — A few hours before she vanished, Deidre Harm, a 21-year-old small-town mother with an infant daughter, telephoned her dad, Scott Harm, the man who had raised her almost on his own since high school, brimming with excitement and all but pestering him to clear his schedule so he could help her move into her new apartment.

It was going to be a new beginning for his daughter, Scott Harm recalled. For the first time in her life, Deidre was going to have her own place, and though she had always been close to her roommates, virtually becoming part of their families, she had her own family now, just her and her 4-month-old daughter, Vegas.

"She... was just overwhelmed with joy because she had just got done signing the lease on a new apartment," a modest and comparatively safe place in downtown Wisconsin Rapids, a stone's throw from the post office, the movie theater and the local bars frequented by Deidre and her friends. She could have moved farther from her roots, of course, but she often told friends, Scott Harm recalled, that she wanted to remain close to her dad, the one man in her life who had always been there for her, and to whom she could always turn. In fact, she was turning to him that night. She wanted him to help her move, and she wanted him to do it immediately. "She asked me to help her move in that night," Scott told Crime Library. When he suggested that it was getting late, and that perhaps they should put it off until the following day, Deidre persisted.

"She said, 'No dad, you don't understand, I've got my own place, I've got to go to work tomorrow, I've got to pay rent," Harm recalled, adding, "It's always good for a dad to hear that kind of stuff. She's got her priorities."
