It was shortly before 1 a.m. when the children came out.  Afterwards, police heard a single gunshot echo in the background.  In response to the gunfire, the Special Tactical Operations Team fired teargas into the apartment.  Once the smoke cleared, investigators rushed inside, and found Robinson dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

In the aftermath of the shooting, there was no time to reflect on what happened.  Police had to regroup, and concentrate their efforts on finding Cheri.  Going on the information that Robinson had given them, police began to search a 40-acre wooded lot around a nearby school.  Time was of the essence.  Many people believed, or at least tried to convince them selves, that there was a remote possibility that Cheri could still be alive.  As slim as the odds were, there was a possibility that Robinson may have just injured his wife or might have been lying altogether, and had just tied her up somewhere in the woods.  What really happened between them is anyone's guess.

For over a week, police scoured the woods by land and by air.  Both rescue and cadaver dogs were brought in to assist, but they were not able to pick up on a scent.  When the local police chief spoke with the media about the search for Cheri, he compared it to looking for a needle in a haystack.

On May 17, a company called Aftermath Cleaning showed up at 9 School St., and began scrubbing away the aftermath of Robinson's suicide.  While the company worked inside, neighbors spoke with reporters outside.  Those claiming to be in the know, said that Cheri had told them that she was going to leave her husband, and seek custody of their two children.
