Altemio Sanchez Pleads Guilty to the Bike Path Rapes

Despite the fact that Sanchez cannot be charged in any rapes he may have committed prior to 2001, the DNA slides were recently used to prove that Sanchez was responsible for two rapes that kept an innocent man behind bars for 22 years.

In 1985, Anthony J. Capozzi, a mentally disabled man, was arrested for two rapes that occurred in 1983 and 1984.  The victims picked Capozzi out of a police lineup, and it was later determined that his blood type was the same as that of the assailant.  During his 1987 trial, Capozzi was found guilty and sentenced to 11 to 35 years.  Thanks to the discovery of the slides, investigators were able to prove Sanchez was the true perpetrator of the rapes.  Capozzi's convictions were erased last month, and he was finally freed from prison.

Despite the fact that they have not publicly acknowledged it, investigators have to consider the possibility that there could be other innocent men behind bars for rapes committed by Sanchez.  There could also be other murder victims they have yet to connect to him.  Right now, there is an unexplainable 12-year span between his attacks, and serial killers do not generally stop killing voluntarily.

Sanchez will be sentenced on August 2, 2007.  He faces 75 years to life in prison.
