ISRAEL — The Haifa District Court has sentenced Nicolai Bonner, 33, to life in prison for the murders of four Russian immigrants.  According to court records, Bonner beat his victims to death and then set their corpses on fire.  He initially admitted to committing the murders, but later recanted his confessions.  Bonner is also considered a suspect in at least one other murder, dating back to 2004.

CRIME LIBRARY — Karla Homolka - Movie Review: It was a daring thing to do, but writer and director Joel Bender made a true-crime drama based on the infamous story of Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka.  Karla was quite controversial when released in Canada in 2006, and some groups even tried to block it. They were unsuccessful.  Now it's available on DVD.

The film adopts Karla's point of view throughout, and if you believe the performance you'll regard Karla as the prototypical battered wife and compliant accomplice. This can get annoying for anyone familiar with the facts, but in the end it's made clear that her story is pretty much a self-serving "reorganization" of what happened: she never apologized to victims' families, never expressed public remorse, and seemed as narcissistic upon her release as she'd ever been.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — In an unexpected move, the South Carolina State Parole Board has granted parole to Susanne Owens.  In 1977, Owens was convicted of hiring notorious serial killer Pee Wee Gaskins to murder her ex-boyfriend, Silas Barnwell Yates.  Owens escaped from prison in 1993 and managed to stay on the run for more than two years before being recaptured.  Owens will be released from Leath Correctional Institution next month.  Gaskins was put to death 15 years ago for the murders of 16 people.
