Last week Jodie's father, Robert Gater, talked about the tragedy on the Austereo radio network. During the interview he had this warning for parents:

"Love the kids, give them a great big hug every now and then, and do family things with them," he said. "Don't let them get bottled up in a room that has a computer in it (so) that you don't see them for eight hours a day or something, and I just urge all parents that they try and make sure they do those things ... If it can help parents, the only thing I would say, and I think Steph's mum would agree with me, is that both of the girls seemed almost too good ... they were too well behaved."

Some experts have expressed concern that Stephanie and Jodie's deaths might encourage other troubled teens to follow in their path. In order to help students cope, Upwey High School principal Greg Holman held a crisis assembly last week to counsel the students.

"One of our strengths as a school community is that we are a tight knit group who will support each other in these difficult times," Holman told Star News Group. "Counselors are already working with students and staff and will continue to support the whole school community."

The social networking website MySpace.com has also announced its intention to promote awareness about youth suicide. The website recently posted banner ads on a variety of subjects, including grief and depression. Whether or not it will have an impact is yet to be seen.
