Spending Spree

Meanwhile, Sandra reportedly ran up $20,000 in charges on her husband's American Express card.

"He was very disturbed over the amount," Gloria Rehrig told Crime Library. "It wasn't that he didn't want her to use (the credit card). It was that she just was crazy about spending."

Alan's boss later said the credit card company was hounding Alan for the money, sometimes calling him at his office two or three times a day.

When Alan and Sandra split up in November 1985, Alan moved in temporarily with a friend from work, Phil Askew, and his wife.

After separating from Sandra, Alan told his friend Karl McKinney that all he wanted from the marriage were his golf clubs and his camping equipment.

Alan's mom called him at the Askews' house on Dec. 2. He hadn't told her he and Sandra were separated, one of his friends had. Gloria and Alan talked for over an hour. Alan said he didn't want anyone to think badly of Sandra.

They talked some about Sandra's past.

"Do you feel like there are untruths that she may have told you?" his mother asked.

"Yes," Alan said. "I'm beginning to think that."

Only later, after Alan's death, did Gloria learn that Sandra had had a hysterectomy several years before she married Alan. There had been no pregnancy. No twins. No miscarriage.
