Tanya Kach, Ex Slave: The Line between Yes and No

(Continued)

Hard Questions

advertisement

Hose's attorney has claimed that Kach is making up stories, and that she in fact wanted to stay with Hose, even to marry him. Given how difficult it may be to believe she never had a chance in ten years to escape, especially since over the past six years she was allowed out for brief periods, it's likely that before this is all over Kach will have to answer some hard questions. Among them may be:

What tactics did Hose actually use to keep her so compliant that she made no noise for the first four years? (She has said that a few times he threatened to kill her, but then when he would leave, why didn't she at least try to get someone's attention out on the street? His actual method of brainwashing her into such utter compliance for so long has yet to be revealed.)

She says she thought her family did not want her home, but if that's the reason she stayed with Hose after he allowed her some freedom, by the time she was 19 or 20, she could have gotten a job and moved out. Why, at the age of 24, was she still acting as if she had no options?

Why did she so readily accept his statement that no one was looking for her? Was it because it had been her choice to run away?

Did he tell her that his parents downstairs would also kill her, and if not, why didn't she try to get their attention and help?

Why did it take so long for her to take advantage of her limited amounts of freedom over the past six years and what precipitated her ultimate confession to Sparico?

It may well be that she can answer these questions satisfactorily. But we should also ask, does Hose fit the profile of the kind of man who needs total control over another person? Psychopathic individuals have no empathy or sympathy, because to them other people are merely objects. They don't feel deeply so they don't have any sense of the terror and pain that another person can experience, except that they're pleased to know they can elicit this response. It remains to be seen what kind of man Hose is. He's been named as a suspect in the death of another young girl from the area, but as yet, we have little information about him, aside from his willingness to be sexually involved with an underage girl and keep her from her family. The reports indicate that he was held in high regard at the school. Was he able to skillfully hone and carry on such a façade?
