regarding enhanced Home Depot Surveillance Video

CHICAGO, Ill. (Crime Library) — Last month the Chicago Police Department made public a security video from Sept. 30, 2006, that shows a man purchasing an item at a Home Depot store that is identical to an item that was found at the scene of Dr. David Cornbleet's murder.  Since that time, no one has come forward to identify the man in the video.  Dr. Cornbleet's son, Jonathan Cornbleet, decided to take the matter into his own hands and earlier this month he took to the footage to BEK TEK LLC in hopes they might be able to refine the images.

Retired FBI agent Bruce E. Koenig founded BEK TEK LLC in 1995.  According to the company's website, Bektekllc.com, they are "dedicated to providing objective, scientific examinations of audio and video recordings."  The company offers a variety of services, including video image enhancement.  For this process they utilize state of the art technology, including software designed by NASA, to improve the quality of an image, using "magnification, de-interlacing, de-convolution, filtering, masking, zoom, slow motion, looping, and gamma changes."

"I did a lot of research before selecting BEK TEK," Jonathan said in a telephone interview with Crime Library yesterday evening.  "America's Most Wanted had told me they would utilize image enhancement resources if they aired an episode about my dad, so I just thought ok, why don't I do it myself.  I looked around and eventually decided on BEK TEK."

Jonathan funded the initiative and with the help of Chicago Police's Area 4 Detective Division, he was able to provide BEK TEK with the Sept. 30 surveillance footage.  Jonathan was surprised by how quickly the company clarified the images.

"I was amazed by how quickly they completed the process.  It was done in just two days.  They are really good.  They are very clear pictures.  There not portraitesque, but if you knew the guy you would clearly be able to identify him."

While he was careful not to identify the person in the video as a suspect in his father's murder, Jonathan did say he found it suspicious that the person has not come forward.
