Even after their breakup, Oefelein and Nowak agreed to work out together and to continue training for upcoming bicycle races in which they both competed.

"I told him that it made me very uncomfortable and it made me want to pull away from this relationship, cause it made me think that he didn't quite cut ties maybe," Shipman told investigators.

She also said that once while she was in bed with Oefelein at his apartment, he called her Lisa.

Shipman told police that she confronted Oefelein about his relationship with Nowak and demanded to know if it was really over.

According to a recently released transcript of her statement, Shipman told detectives: "I point-blank asked him, are you sure she's okay with this? Because you know how these things go...is there gonna be some crazy lady showing up at my door trying to kill me? And he said, 'No, no, no, she's not like that. She's fine with it. She's happy for me.'"

Last week, prosecutors declined to charge Nowak with attempted murder, but did charge her with attempted kidnapping and burglary with assault, charges that could land the once high-flying astronaut in prison for life.

On Wednesday, March 7th, NASA officials announced they had dismissed Nowak from the space agency's astronaut corps. NASA spokesman James Hartfield said that since Nowak is an officer in the U.S. Navy, not a civilian employee, the agency lacks the administrative procedures to deal with the allegations against her.

Nowak, a naval flight officer, will be reassigned to duties with the Navy.

Roger Launius, a space historian with the Smithsonian Institution, said Nowak's dismissal marks the first time NASA has publically fired an astronaut. She is also the first active astronaut charged with a felony.
