NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Crime Library) — Two out-of-town college students from Ohio got more than they bargained for early Sunday morning when the cab driver they hired to take them to Vanderbilt University tried to kill them.
Metropolitan Nashville Police Department spokeswoman Kristin Mumford said Jeremy Invus and Andrew Nelson, who were visiting Nashville, climbed into a blue Chevrolet minivan owned by the United Cab Company for a ride back to Vanderbilt University. Along the way, they got into a discussion about religion with their driver, Ibrahim Ahmed, a 37-year-old immigrant from Somalia.

According to published reports, Jeremy and Andrew are Christian. One is Roman Catholic and the other is Lutheran, although it is not clear which one is which. Ahmed is a Muslim.
The religious debate turned into an argument and became "heated," according to Mumford. When the cab reached the Vanderbilt campus, the two students got out. They paid their fare and walked away. But Ahmed, their driver, had a different idea. After pulling away from the two men, whom he had dropped off in a parking lot, Ahmed spun his cab around and raced after them, leaving burned rubber marks on the pavement.
Jeremy and Andrew tried to escape the onrushing car by sprinting away from the parking lot and running to a grassy area, according to a police affidavit, but the crazed cabbie bounced the van over a curb and continued after them. Ahmed missed Andrew but managed to run over Jeremy, breaking the young man's ankle and smashing his hip.
"He had serious injuries to his pelvis," Mumford told Crime Library. "He was busted up pretty bad."
