Stan Carpenter, chief of detectives for the Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office, said Saturday that evidence found inside the truck linked Lewis to Kaitlin's death, although he would not elaborate on the nature of that evidence.

"We can't get into that," Carpenter told The Advocate. "We are not going to put that out. All I can say is that we found evidence to substantiate (the second-degree murder) charge."

Under Louisiana law, a conviction for second-degree murder carries a mandatory life sentence.

Lewis is being held in the Livingston Parish Prison on a $500,000 bond originally set for the obstruction of justice charge, but Carpenter speculated Lewis's bond would likely be increased because of the added murder count.

Carpenter said also that additional charges against Lewis might be forthcoming.
