"He looked like he was about to break down, like he was about to cry," Simoneaux told a television news reporter.

Lewis left quickly, but called Simoneaux a few minutes later and said he was driving around the town of St. Amant, where searchers found Kaitlin's body two days later. In an apparent attempt to explain the scratches on his face, Lewis told Simoneaux he'd recently gotten into a fight.

Forty-five minutes to an hour after that first phone call, Lewis again called Simoneaux. This time he mentioned he knew authorities were looking for the missing 13-year-old girl. "I hope they don't think I had anything to do with it," Lewis said.

Lewis then asked his friend to tell sheriff's investigators, if they questioned Simoneaux, that Lewis had been with him at his house at 4:30 that afternoon.

Shortly after that last telephone conversation, Simoneaux decided to tell sheriff's investigators about Lewis's visit and their telephone conversations.

At 3:00 Friday morning, Feb. 2, sheriff's detectives arrested Lewis for obstruction of justice and sent his truck to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab.
