ATHENS, Pa. (Crime Library) —  It has been nearly three months since the murder of David and Carol Keeffe, and yet, no arrests have been made.  Last month, Athens Township Police Chief Larry Hurley told Crime Library the killing was not a random act, suggesting the murders had been planned.

"It's not like we have an assassin running around the streets at night assassinating individuals in the valley area," he said.  "That's not true.  These individuals were targeted for a very specific reason, and that is something we are still looking into."

Yesterday, I asked Hurley for an update on the case.  "There is nothing more since I talked to you last time," he said.  "Nothing to release publicly.  We are still waiting for lab tests."

From the start of the investigation, the Athens Township Police Department has been coactively working on the investigation with the Pennsylvania State Police.  The lead investigator with the state police department is Lt. Frank Hacken.  After many failed attempts to reach Hacken, this reporter was finally put in touch with Corporal Grimes, an investigator from the North Towanda barracks who is assisting in the investigation.  According to Grimes, there is "no new information."  When asked if the investigation was moving forward, he replied, "I have no comment."

On Jan. 11, a "media advisory" was sent out from Paul Lyon of Lyon Strategic Communications.  According to Mr. Lyon, the Keeffe family hired him to handle all media relations.  Last week, I sent an email to Mr. Lyon, asking if there was any new information he could share.  His reply was as follows:

"The investigation is continuing and at this point, we are confident the police are doing everything in their power to bring whomever is responsible for this heinous crime to justice.  We urge anyone who might have any information, however insignificant they think it might be, to come forward and share it with the police... The family would also like to thank the media for its patience, understanding and sensitivity during this difficult time. Hopefully, we'll have some news to report in the near future."
