ATHENS, Pa. (Crime Library) —  State and local authorities say they are not yet ready to make an arrest in the murder of David and Carol Keeffe. Yesterday, Crime Library reporter David Lohr had the opportunity to talk face-to-face with Athens Township Police Chief Larry Hurley.

According to Hurley, there has been a lot of misinformation produced by various individuals. It was his hope that by talking about the case, he could dispel some of the rumors beginning to plague the investigation.

"There has been a lot of speculation and street talk," he said. We've got a tremendous amount of work to do. Is there a light at the end of the tunnel? Maybe, but to get something in front of a jury to make a conviction, you almost have to have video of the crime. It is tough to win a case of this magnitude in front of the jury, so that's why we have to do everything we can. We have a lot of hard work ahead of us. People watch CSI, and they think instant gratification. Unfortunately, it does not work that way."

The Athens Township Police Department is coactively working on the investigation with the Pennsylvania State Police and the Bradford County District Attorney's Office.  In order to focus their investigation, the decision was made to convert the second floor of the Athens police department into a temporary command center, which could be used as a mutual gathering point to investigate the murders.

Chief Hurley would not comment on search warrants served in New York. He would only say that none has been served in the state of Pennsylvania. Authorities in Waverly, New York, refused to comment. When asked whether a pond was drained, Hurley had this to say: "There has been no pond drained anywhere regarding this case. We did look at a pond. Sure. But did we drain it? No. Did we search it? Possibly, yes. But we did not drain it."
