Neighbors also reported no suspicious sounds during the hours when authorities believe the killings took place, giving rise to the possibility that instead of a random act by an itinerant killer, the Harveys may have known their attacker or attackers and perhaps even invited them inside. Authorities have not suggested that other members of the community need to worry about their safety.

By all accounts, both Bryan Harvey, a well-known local rock musician who had gained some national fame in the 1990s as a member of the band House of Freaks, and his wife were well-respected members of the community, both noted for their charm and kindness. Neither is believed to have had any significant personal, substance abuse or financial problems of the sort that might bring them into contact with the kind of violence that claimed their lives.

Investigators are probing other people in the family's life — friends, relatives and acquaintances — to determine whether any of them may have information that might lead to the killer or killers.  "Everything is under investigation," Nelson said.
